Wimbledon Park Playground in Merton, London
As a local parent in London, Wimbledon Park Playground in Merton is hands down one of my favourite free spots to take the kids, especially in the summer. It’s an absolute gem when it comes to free family activities in London. It’s not just a playground—there’s so much to do here that you could easily spend the whole day.
The playground itself is huge, and what I love most is that it caters to kids of all ages. My little one absolutely adores the slide, and there’s a fantastic climbing frame that will keep them entertained for hours. There’s also a brilliant little play bus that toddlers love! We often end up staying much longer than planned, but that’s the charm of this place.
When the weather’s warm, the sprinkler, splash pool, and paddling fountains are lifesavers. The kids can splash about for hours, having the best time. If you’re planning a visit, make sure to pack a picnic blanket and some snacks, as you’ll definitely want to settle in while the kids play in the water. It’s perfect for a budget-friendly day out, and these kinds of free family activities in London are just what every parent needs.
One of the things I appreciate most about Wimbledon Park is how close it is to Wimbledon Park tube station—super convenient when you’ve got toddlers in tow. It’s also great for older kids, with activities like mini golf, a pond, and even tennis courts and a cricket ground nearby. There’s something for everyone, including electric cycle rentals, which add a bit of fun for older family members.
The park’s not just about the playground though. There are plenty of open spaces and picnic areas, and you can even grab a coffee from a nearby cart, which is a bonus when you need a little break while watching the kids run wild. There are also clean restrooms on-site, making the whole visit that bit easier. On our last trip, we met some lovely families who frequent the park just like us—it’s definitely a popular spot in the community.
We’ve had so many wonderful days out here that it’s become a regular go-to for us. If you’re looking for a free, family-friendly park in London that offers so much more than just a playground, Wimbledon Park Playground is perfect. Whether you’re here for the sprinklers, the climbing frames, or just to enjoy some fresh air, it’s a great place for smart parenting on a budget. Definitely a must-visit!
