    Overview

If you’re looking for a smart way to spend time outdoors with the kids, Surrey Docks Farm in London is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. We visited with our little ones and were blown away by how lovely this place is — it’s the perfect spot for families wanting a relaxed day out without spending a fortune. And the best part? It’s totally free to visit! We arrived at around 11am, and the farm is open from 10am to 4pm every day, even on bank holidays, which is so convenient. As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by a small maze garden filled with fresh herbs and flowers, and the smell is just divine! My son loved wandering through the maze, and the whole farm has this calm, peaceful vibe that’s such a welcome change from the busy streets of London. There are all sorts of animals to meet, from goats, sheep, cows, and pigs to more unusual farm residents like ferrets, guinea pigs, and even bees! It’s such a lovely way for the kids to learn about animals up close. My little one was particularly fascinated by the donkeys and the pony, and we spent ages feeding the goats and sheep (barley is provided, which was a huge hit!). One thing I really appreciated is that the farm has well-maintained toilets, including accessible toilets and a baby changing area, which makes things so much easier when you’re out and about with young kids. After wandering around the animals, we headed to the riverside café, which overlooks the Thames. We grabbed some hot drinks and St. Jude ice cream, and there are even a couple of vegan cake options. The café has outdoor seating, and it’s such a pleasant spot to sit while the kids enjoy their treats. The farm also runs programmes for young volunteers, which is brilliant if you’ve got older kids who might want to get involved with animal care. It’s clear the animals are well looked after, and the whole place is a lovely mix of learning and outdoor fun. The only thing missing is a playground, but honestly, there’s so much to do that the kids didn’t even notice! One of the highlights for us was the farm’s beautiful view of the Canary Wharf skyline—it’s such a contrast between the city and the farm, but it works perfectly. Whether it’s your kids’ first time seeing farm animals or just another fun outing, this place really delivers. I’d highly recommend Surrey Docks Farm for families looking for free family-friendly activities in London. It’s a fantastic way to spend the day, and the fact that it’s free of charge makes it a real winner in our book! Definitely pack a snack or enjoy the treats from the café and make a day of it. We’ll definitely be going back soon!
