St James’s Park Playground In Westminster
If you’re looking for a great spot to take the kids in Westminster, London, St James’s Park Playground is a true hidden gem. Tucked away in one of the London’s most stunning parks, it’s the perfect stop for families exploring the area. As a parent, I’m always on the lookout for smart family activities that won’t break the bank, and this playground really ticks all the boxes.
The playground is fully fenced, giving you peace of mind while your little ones run around. It’s also surrounded by the beauty of St James’s Park, with a glimpse of Buckingham Palace from the play area—how many playgrounds can boast that? We even saw some pelicans resting nearby, which was a delightful surprise for the kids.
Perfect for Younger Kids and Toddlers
The playground is on the smaller side but packed with plenty to do. There’s a lovely sandpit with boulders and a stone bridge, which was a huge hit with the toddlers. My youngest could have stayed there all day, so I’d recommend bringing some sand toys if you’ve got them (we forgot ours and ended up improvising with spoons and cups from our bag).
For slightly older children, there’s a climbing wall, rope bridges, and swings, plus a chain-suspended ship that sparks plenty of imaginative play. The whole place feels well thought out for kids of different ages, and the equipment is in great condition.
One thing I really appreciated was the children-only toilets right inside the playground. They’re free to use and well-maintained, with an attendant keeping everything in order. There’s also a kiosk just outside the playground selling coffee, snacks, and some delicious ice cream—perfect for keeping everyone fuelled up.
Located just a short walk from St James’s Park Tube Station, the playground is easy to find and a fantastic way to break up a busy day of sightseeing. We paired our visit with a walk through the park, squirrel-spotting, and catching the Changing of the Guard nearby. It’s a great example of smart parenting tips for London outings, combining free activities with a bit of downtime for the kids.
- Plan ahead: Bring sand toys and snacks for the kids—you’ll likely stay longer than expected.
- Timing: It can get busy, especially on weekends and sunny days, so aim to visit earlier or later in the day.
- Combine activities: Take advantage of the playground’s location by exploring St James’s Park or other nearby landmarks like Buckingham Palace.
Why we loved it
This playground is one of the best free family-friendly parks in London and a top pick for me. It’s ideal for younger kids and toddlers, and the location makes it a smart addition to any family day out in Westminster, London. Whether you’re on a budget or just looking for a fun, hassle-free spot for the kids, St James’s Park Playground is a must-visit.
