    Overview

As a London parent, I’m always on the lookout for new places that are educational, fun, and, most importantly, free! So, when we stumbled upon the National Army Museum in Chelsea, it quickly became a favourite family outing spot. It's not just another museum – it’s packed with interactive exhibits that make history come alive for kids of all ages. Our visit started with a family trail around the Formation gallery, where we took on some engaging challenges. The little ones absolutely loved trying on the army uniforms, and I’ll admit, even I got into the spirit, helping my kids perfect their poses in the sentry box! They giggled at the magnifying glass activity, searching for hidden details in King George VI’s coronation procession scroll. The uniform blocks were a hit too. My two children, aged 4 and 7, enjoyed spinning the blocks to match up the soldiers’ uniforms through the ages – a great way to introduce them to history in a fun, hands-on way. But the highlight for us was the Churchill Mk VII tank – a must for any little one with a fascination for vehicles. We climbed aboard and got a real sense of what it was like to be part of a tank crew! One of the lovely surprises at the museum was the small but sweet soft play area, which was a perfect spot for a quick break. While the area is on the smaller side, our two had around 40 minutes of pure fun before they were ready to move on. We also participated in a remembrance activity where we chose a poppy, wrote a message, and added it to their display – a thoughtful touch to teach kids about remembrance. As for the exhibitions, we were impressed with displays like Lawrence of Arabia's robes and the coin that stopped a bullet – little tidbits that kept the whole family engaged. The museum itself is beautifully maintained, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Even our youngest (2 years old) was involved in a workshop with the staff, and we felt so welcome throughout the day. I would highly recommend the National Army Museum for a day out, whether you’re local or just visiting London. It’s a hidden gem, and one of the best free family-friendly museums in London, packed with history, learning opportunities, and just enough fun to keep the kids entertained. So, if you’re planning smart family activities in London and looking for free family attractions or hidden gems to explore with the kids, this is one you shouldn’t miss! The National Army Museum truly delivers a brilliant, interactive, and educational experience for all ages.
