Overview
If you’re looking for a smart family day out in London, Golders Hill Park Playground and Zoo should be at the top of your list. It’s one of those hidden gems where you get to enjoy nature, fun, and learning—all for free! As a local parent, I’ve visited several times with my kids, and it’s always a great experience.
The playground itself is fantastic. There are separate areas depending on the age of your children, so whether you’ve got toddlers or slightly older kids, there’s something for everyone. My little ones absolutely love the sandpit, which is large enough for them to dig and play for hours. There are plenty of swings, slides, and climbing frames, and my eldest is always up for tackling the ropes and adventurous climbing equipment.
For kids up to 6 or 7 years old, this is easily one of the best playgrounds in London. The castle playground is a firm favourite in our family, and the toddler area has recently been renovated, making it even more enjoyable for younger kids. With the large open space, they can run around freely, burning off that endless energy.
What sets Golders Hill Park apart, though, is the free zoo. Yes, you read that right—there’s a zoo within the park that doesn’t cost a penny! The animals are lively and well cared for. My kids especially love the donkeys and deer, but you’ll also spot some more exotic creatures like ring-tailed lemurs and wallabies. It’s such a treat for city kids to see these animals up close, without needing to go far or break the bank.
One of the highlights for us is the range of animals you get to see. From the adorable Scottish wildcats to Bennett's wallabies and kookaburras, there’s always something new to discover. The zoo also features an eagle owl and red junglefowl, adding a bit of excitement to the visit. And of course, the fallow deer are a big hit with the children.
The park itself is beautifully maintained, and the lovely flower gardens are an added bonus for parents who fancy a relaxing walk after the kids have had their fun in the playground. We often pack a picnic and make a day of it—there’s something truly calming about spending a whole afternoon here with the family.
Golders Hill Park is an excellent spot for smart parenting, where the kids can learn, explore, and play for free. Whether you’re looking to get the kids outdoors, explore animals, or simply enjoy one of the best free family activities in London, this park ticks all the boxes.
So, if you’re searching for the ultimate free London attraction for families, head to Golders Hill Park! A playground, a zoo, and beautiful surroundings—it doesn’t get much better than that.
